Pouchitis and Inflammatory Pouch Disorders
Key Points
Key Points
- Pouchitis is the most common complication after restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) for ulcerative colitis. It affects 48% of patients within the worst 2 years after IPAA and up to 80% of patients at some point after IPAA.
- Multiple strategies, some only recently developed, have been used in the treatment and prevention of pouchitis and inflammatory pouch conditions, including antibiotics, probiotics, corticosteroids, and advanced immunosuppressive therapies (eg, biologics and oral small molecule drugs).
- This guideline provides guidance on the management of pouchitis and other inflammatory disorders (such as Crohn’s-like disease of the pouch and cuffitis) that can occur after colectomy with IPAA.
