The 2026 annual meeting of the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) is just a few weeks away. From September 29 through October 2 in Orlando, Florida, the AANEM Annual Meeting features educational sessions, hands-on workshops, networking opportunities, and more. Registration is currently open, with late registration beginning on September 1 and running through the duration of the meeting.

Tuesday, September 29
- Autoimmune NM Disorders in Children
- 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM
- Description: Recognize complex and rare presentations of autoimmune NM conditions in pediatric patients, including juvenile dermatomyositis, pediatric inflammatory myositis, juvenile MG, and pediatric autoimmune neuropathy or nodopathy; interpret case-based diagnostic workups for these disorders; and apply evidence-informed treatment algorithms to manage cases acutely and chronically across inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Maternal-Fetal Health Considerations in NM Medicine
- 8:00 AM – 9:30 AM
- Description: [This session will] summarize current evidence and knowledge gaps in managing pregnancy in patients with NMD; outline safe practices for pre-pregnancy counseling, monitoring, and medication management during pregnancy and lactation; and explain how multidisciplinary care addresses conception, pregnancy complications, labor and delivery, and the effects of medications and other treatments on fertility, fetal development, and lactation.
- MGFA Scientific Session

- Description: The MGFA Scientific Session will include presentations highlighting the latest advancements in our understanding of MG etiology, immunopathology, therapeutic developments, and management.
- Surgical Management of Neuralgic Amyotrophy
- 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
- Description: [This session will] discuss indications, timing, and types of surgical intervention (neurolysis vs. nerve transfer) used to support recovery in neuralgic amyotrophy, and review outcomes of neurolysis compared with nerve transfer surgery using data from the largest reported nerve transfer cohort (>40 patients, publication pending) as well as prior published experience.

- Description: The MGFA Scientific Session will include presentations highlighting the latest advancements in our understanding of MG etiology, immunopathology, therapeutic developments, and management.
- Optoacoustic Imaging
- 4:15 PM – 4:45 PM
- Description: This plenary session, presented by Rotem Orbach, MD, focuses on the clinical translation of multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT), an emerging investigational imaging technology that enables non-invasive assessment of skeletal muscle composition. The lecture will highlight the principles of MSOT, its preliminary validation in health and NM disease, and its potential applications in clinical research, disease monitoring, and real-world patient management.
- 3D Neural Organoids to Treat Neurogenetic Disorders

- Description: This plenary session, presented by Rebecca Levy, MD, PhD, focuses on human cellular model systems and how they can be leveraged to identify treatment in neurogenetic disorders, specifically using antisense oligonucleotides to treat the Timothy syndrome sub-diagnosis of CACNA1C related disorders.

- Description: [During this session, presenters will] review scanning techniques and anatomic assessment of pertinent nerves and surrounding structures through live scanning demonstrations, and describe the EDX approach to pre-surgical evaluation using case-based examples.
- Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy

- Description: [Presenters will] describe the clinical presentation, genetic basis and key phenotype–genotype correlations, diagnostic approach, and treatment options for the LGMDs.
- The Role of Pathology in Diagnosis Muscle Disease in the Age of Genetic Testing

- Description: [Presenters will] identify clinical scenarios in which muscle biopsy remains an appropriate diagnostic test for suspected genetic muscle disorders, and discuss challenging or illustrative cases with an expert.
- Basics of NCS and Needle EMG - Part 1

- Description: [During this session, presenters will] describe the basic concepts underlying NCS and appropriate study design; perform and interpret NCS in the upper and lower extremities and recognize anomalous innervations; summarize the role of specialized studies, including RNS, cranial nerve testing, and blink reflex; utilize needle EMG in the diagnosis of NMDs and identify common pitfalls; and explain technical factors and key safety considerations that affect study quality and patient safety.
- Inpatient MG Management in the Era of Novel Therapeutics

- Description: [Attendees will learn to] Manage inpatient myasthenic crisis using intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg), plasmapheresis, and steroids alongside emerging Fc receptor antagonists, complement inhibitors, B‑cell–depleting agents, and CAR‑T–based strategies, recognizing indications, sequencing, and safety considerations for each. [Along with learning to] anticipate and manage therapeutic complications and rehabilitation needs in hospitalized patients with MG receiving novel agents, coordinating multidisciplinary care to support recovery after discharge.

- Acquired Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Animal Models of Diabetic Neuropathy

- Description: This plenary session, presented by Christopher Cashman, MD, PhD, focuses on recent work identifying intrinsic and extrinsic sources of distal mitochondrial dysfunction and how this impairment may drive axonal degeneration. He will conclude with a discussion of possible future translational impacts for diagnosis and treatment of length dependent neuropathies.

- Description: [Presenters will] identify key elements of EDX studies used to assess subacute lesions; critically design and tailor EDX examinations in real time; formulate diagnostic impressions that include prognosis; and discuss how EDX findings influence treatment options for subacute nerve lesions.
- Pediatric Hot Topics

- Description: [This session will] describe recent advances in pediatric NM medicine, including the evolving clinical trial and treatment landscapes for SMA, DMD, Friedreich ataxia, LGMD, and myotonic dystrophy type 1; and explain a novel framework for translational NMD research using a LAMA-2 in vitro model.
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Beyond the Basics

- Description: [Presenters will] differentiate true CTS from MSK mimics, grade severity accurately using EDX and US; identify post-operative complications; and formulate evidence-based treatment plans that distinguish surgical candidates from those requiring conservative care, ensuring precise management for even complex presentations.
- Case-Based Approach to Peripheral Nerve and Muscle Pathology

- Description: [Presenters will] describe the fundamentals of nerve and muscle biopsy procedures, including commonly used histological stains; review clinical cases that illustrate appropriate indications for nerve and muscle biopsy; identify criteria for selecting biopsy targets based on clinical presentation and diagnostic imaging; interpret nerve and muscle biopsy findings in correlation with EMG, MRI, and US results; and analyze relevant nerve and muscle pathology as demonstrated in the clinical cases presented.
- Motor Unit Imaging

- Description: This plenary session, presented by Matthew Birkbeck, PhD, focuses on motor unit MRI, a revolutionary leap in NM imaging. This novel, non-invasive imaging method provides unprecedented insights into motor unit activity, offering a powerful new tool to detect and track the progression of diseases such as ALS. He will also discuss how this technology is moving from the lab to the clinic to benefit patients.
- To Infinity and Beyond: SBMA as a Model for Next Generation Biomarkers
- 4:35 PM – 5:05 PM
- Description: This plenary session, presented by Abdullah Al Qahtani, MD, focuses on how studying rare diseases such as SBMA can accelerate the development of next-generation biomarkers that extend beyond traditional diagnostic approaches. Emerging tools including imaging-based measures, digital technologies, and novel protein biomarkers may improve disease monitoring, enhance clinical trial readiness, and inform biomarker development across a broad range of NM disorders.
- Reproducible Cell-Type Specific ALS/FTD Associated Transcriptomic Changes by Meta-Analysis of Postmortem Brain Single-Nucleus RNA Sequencing Datasets

- Description: This plenary session, presented by Mai Yamakawa, MD, focuses on the latest findings from meta-analysis of single nucleus RNA sequencing datasets of postmortem brain from ALS and frontotemporal dementia patients to depict cell type-specific disease associated transcriptomic changes.
