Today we’ll be going over the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease’s newest update on the Diagnosis, Management, and Prevention of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease also known as COPD.
This report by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease, also known as GOLD, is updated annually and serves as a global resource for clinicians, guiding COPD management in alignment with local healthcare systems.
In today’s rapid update video, we’ll just be going over the key changes from this major 2026 update. Let’s get started.
- First, the chapter on Burden of COPD includes the newest epidemiology and references.
- Updates were made to the chapter on screening and case-finding, including the addition of two new supporting figures
- For people with COPD, vaccine recommendations now reflect current RSV and influenza vaccine information
- Adjusted GOLD A, B, and E criteria have been modified. New evidence shows that an exacerbation increases future risk
- The report now includes a section on disease activity
- Algorithms on management cycle and treatment were updated to distinguish between initial treatment and follow-up treatment
- A new figure summarizes evidence on the use of biologic therapy
- The chapter on COPD exacerbations has been rewritten as well as the addition of new figures
- The chapter on COPD multimorbidity has also been fully reworked, with new accompanying figures.
- A completely new chapter now covers artificial intelligence and emerging technologies
- The report has been reorganized, shifting much of the text and figures to Appendix sections 1-4
- A new table of abbreviations has been added and used throughout the report
- And last, references have been reviewed across the report
