Ultra-Processed Food Consumption and Blood Pressure in Pregnant Women With Chronic Hypertension: An Exploratory Analysis of Baseline Data From the NIT-CH Trial
- Objective: This study aimed to characterize the nutritional, biochemical, and food consumption profiles at baseline and explore the associations between ultra-processed food consumption and blood pressure in pregnant women with chronic hypertension.
- Conclusion: Ultra-processed food consumption was positively associated with diastolic blood pressure, suggesting that food consumption quality may play a role in blood pressure control in this high-risk population. These findings are exploratory and should be interpreted with caution.
Protocol of a Randomized Trial of a Guidelines-Based Diet With or Without Ultra-Processed Plant Proteins for Blood Pressure and Other Risk Factors in Adults With Hypertension
- Objective: Systolic blood pressure is a major outcome tied to ultra-processed food intake in observational studies and the single most important risk factor as the #1 contributor to global morbidity and mortality. Recent guidelines call for high-quality studies to understand the role of nutrient-dense soy-protein ultra-processed foods within recommended dietary patterns. Our objective is to determine if a high-ultra-processed food soy protein-containing guidelines-based diet is non-inferior to a low-ultra-processed food, soy protein-containing, guidelines-based diet in replacing standard of care for systolic blood pressure reduction and other ultra-processed food-related cardiometabolic risk factors.
- Conclusion: Findings will provide high-quality evidence on the role of nutrient-dense soy foods classified as UPFs within the combination of two guideline-based dietary patterns to support dietary strategies for cardiometabolic risk reduction.
Effects of a Combined MIND Diet and HIIT Intervention on Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Body Composition, and Quality of Life in Adults with Hypertension: A Pilot Study
- Objective: Hypertension is associated with low cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), excess adiposity, and reduced quality of life. This study evaluated the feasibility and preliminary effects of a four-week combined Mediterranean–DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet and high-intensity interval training program on cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, and quality of life in adults with hypertension and overweight/obesity.
- Conclusion: In adults with hypertension and overweight/obesity, a four-week combined MIND diet and high-intensity interval training intervention was feasible and associated with improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, and selected quality of life domains.
Combined MIND Diet and High-Intensity Interval Training Intervention for Blood Pressure Reduction in Adults With Hypertension: A Pilot Study
- Objective: [The goal was] To evaluate the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a 4-week combined Mediterranean–DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet and high-intensity interval training program on clinic and ambulatory blood pressure in adults with hypertension and overweight/obesity.
- Conclusion: These preliminary findings suggest that a short-term combined MIND diet and high-intensity interval training intervention is feasible and associated with clinically meaningful reductions in blood pressure in adults with hypertension and overweight/obesity.
Effect of the DASH4D Diet on Serum Potassium in Adults With Type 2 Diabetes and Hypertension: The DASH4D Trial
- Objective: To examine the effects of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension for Diabetes (DASH4D) diet on serum potassium levels among adults with type 2 diabetes and hypertension, as concerns about hyperkalemia may limit adoption of this potassium-rich dietary pattern.
- Conclusion: In this randomized feeding trial, the DASH4D diet, nearly doubling the dietary potassium of the comparison diet, led to a modest increase in serum potassium with infrequent hyperkalemia events, supporting the safety of the DASH4D dietary pattern with high potassium content for adults with type 2 diabetes.
Navigating Hypertension and Food Insecurity: A Protocol for a Produce Prescription Randomized Controlled Trial in Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Communities
- Objective: Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders are underrepresented in health research on food insecurity and chronic diseases but experience these conditions more frequently than other ethnic groups. This community-centered study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a community health worker-navigated produce prescription program on improving blood pressure, food security, and diet in Hawaiʻi.
- Conclusion: The study would provide much-needed data across the underresearched area of food environment, health status, and food security of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders to further understand the effective implementation of a social intervention on hypertension in Hawaiʻi.
