As the summer heats up, people tend to spend more time lounging around pools and beaches. While the dangers of sunburns and skin damage caused by excessive sun exposure are well-recognized, many people may neglect applying protective sunscreen on cloudy days, not realizing harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can easily penetrate clouds.

UV Safety Awareness Month raises awareness of the dangers posed by UV rays, even on cloudy days. While applying SPF 15+ sunscreen every couple of hours at the pool or beach is a great recommendation, limiting skin protection to bright summer days is likely not enough. UV radiation can cause damage on cloudy, cool, and even snowy days.

Because most skin cancers are caused by exposure to UV light, taking a few extra steps to protect skin can go a long way toward preventing major medical issues in the long run.
