The 2026 annual meeting of the American College of Physicians (ACP) is set for April 16 through April 18, in San Francisco, California. The 2026 ACP Internal Medicine Meeting is three full days of networking and educational opportunities for internal medicine physicians and subspecialists from around the world.

With more than 180 educational sessions scheduled, we have a rundown of sessions focusing on psychiatry and substance use disorders. Times and dates are accurate as of March 6, 2026. Thursday, April 16
  • Cannabis Use: Considerations for caring for the Hospitalized Patient
    • 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
    • Description: This session will focus on how frequent cannabis use impacts pain control and acute/chronic illness, and ways to identify cannabis withdrawal.
  • Partnering for Depression Care: An Interactive Workshop with Role-play of Evidence-based Care for Major Depression
    • 2:45 PM – 3:45 PM, and again 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM
    • Description: Attendees will learn how to apply the Mental Health Care Model in engaging patients who do not desire therapy or do not respond to first-line pharmacotherapies. Attendees will learn to identify barriers for successful treatment of depression in primary care. Attendees will also learn tactics for using the Mental Health Care Model in practice. 
  • Withdrawal in People with Dependencies
    • 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM
    • Description: This session focuses on current protocols and treatments for patients in opioid/marijuana/alcohol/GHB withdrawal and what barriers to effective relief they face, particularly in a hospital setting. 
Friday, April 17
  • The Role and Risks of Psychedelics in the Management of Resistant Mental Health Disorders
    • 7:00 AM – 7:45 AM
    • Description: Attendees will learn what the current role of psychedelics are in the treatment of resistant mental health disorders, including the evidence that supports their use. Attendees will also learn how PCPs can identify patients who may benefit from psychedelics and the potential risks associated with prescribing psychedelics. 
  • Addiction Medicine Essentials for the Inpatient Clinician
    • 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM
    • Description: This session details how the stability of an outpatient addiction treatment plan can be maintained when a patient is admitted to a hospital, along with the current evidence for initiating medications for addiction treatment during hospital admission followed by outpatient care.
  • Cognitive Impairment: Evaluation and Management for the Internal Medicine Physician
    • 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
    • Description: During this session, attendees will learn about the current guidance for the use of disease-modifying agents for mild cognitive impairment, as well as learning about high-value approaches to evaluating a patient with suspected mild cognitive impairment and when it’s appropriate to refer a patient to a neurologist. 
  • Acute Psychosis and Chronic Mental Health on the Wards
    • 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM
    • Description: Attendees will learn how acute psychosis can be distinguished from delirium, what testing is indicated for psychosis, and how patients with underlying psychiatric conditions be managed and supported during medical admission.
  • Managing Behavioral Symptoms in Dementia
    • 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM
    • Description: This session will focus on identifying what is considered mild behavioral impairment in patients with dementia, along with what behaviors providers should target to reduce caregiver burden and functional decline, and how to use pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic strategies for behavior management.
Saturday, April 18
  • Adolescents and Young Adults with Common Mental Health Disorders
    • 9:15 AM – 10:15 AM
    • Description: Attendees will learn how to diagnose common mental health conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety, ADHD), what medications can be used for the treatment of those conditions, what is the most effective method of screening for suicide, and how to access for accommodations in mental health conditions.
  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy Micro-Skils in Medical Practice
    • 9:15 AM – 10:15 AM
    • Description: During this session, the efficacy of CBT will be discussed, and presenters will provide patient education on how patient thinking influences their emotions, behavior, and physiology. Attendees will learn how to promote engagement, adherence, and motivation with structured action planning interventions.
  • Medical Implications of Substance Use Disorder: Best Practices for the Patient and the Disease Process
    • 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
    • Description: Attendees will learn the latest data on oral antibiotic treatment and surgical options for endocarditis or osteomyelitis. Additionally, they will learn how to identify when alcohol use disorder be on the differential diagnoses for neurocognitive symptoms. Diagnostic and management options for methamphetamine and alcohol-induced cardiac pathologies will also be discussed. 
  • Chronic Pain at a Crossroads: Opioid Risks, Cannabis Guidance, and Controversies
    • 2:45 PM – 3:45 PM
    • Description: Within this session, presenters will discuss how pain type and pathophysiology guide opioid and non-opioid treatment selection, along with what current data shows on long-term opioid risks and benefits and how it affects prescribing. In light of new guidelines and policies, presenters will discuss the role of medical cannabis, naltrexone, and non-pharmacological approaches. 
  • Delirium Drug Hospitalization
    • 2:45 PM – 3:45 PM
    • Description: Presenters will discuss what the most common causes and presentations of delirium are in the hospital setting, as well as what hospitalists should know about delirium management and prevention. The session will also discuss what implications an episode of inpatient delirium has regarding postdischarge cognitive trajectory.
