The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) is preparing for its 2025 annual conference. Known as the Family Medicine Experience (FMX), the AAFP annual conference is set to take place in Anaheim, California, from October 5 through October 9. At FMX, attendees can explore the conference’s trio of focus areas covering practice growth, clinical expertise, and career development, in between networking and attending some of the hundreds of educational sessions scheduled.

Sunday, October 5
- 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
- Description: The goal of the session is for attendees to be able to describe the progression of Alzheimer’s disease from preclinical neuropathological changes to clinical dementia and the implications of that trajectory, incorporate cognitive evaluations into workflows to better identify cognitive decline and differentiate between mild impairment and normal, age-related changes, and more.
Mastering Geriatric Assessment: Comprehensive Evaluation for Optimal Care
- 4:45 PM – 5:45 PM
- Description: Attendees will learn about assessing older adults by systematically evaluating factors like cognitive function by using appropriate assessment tools and techniques. The session will also focus on recognizing key geriatric syndromes, developing tailored care plans, and the benefits of multidisciplinary teams to enhance geriatric care.
Monday, October 6
The Family Medicine Psychiatry Toolkit: Modern Augmentation Strategies for Depression
- 6:30 AM – 8:00 AM
- Description: This session will focus on topics like exploring major depressive disorder (MDD), augmentation approaches for MDD including antipsychotics and antidepressants, and personalized treatment planning.
Spiritual Strategies for Reducing Stress
- 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM
- Description: This session will focus on assessing patient’s spiritual needs and preferences to better manage their stress, integrate evidence-based spiritual practices into personalized care plans, and how to address and overcome barriers to incorporating spirituality in clinical practice.
- 2:15 PM – 3:15 PM
- Description: Attendees will learn to identify the indications, contraindications, and common side effects of major classes of psychotropic medications to tailor treatment plans for patients based on their symptoms. The session will also discuss ways to minimize adverse effects and how to analyze the patient’s symptom profile to consider the pros and cons of each medication option.
Tuesday, October 7
Role of Family Medicine in Alzheimer’s & Other Dementias
- 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM
- Description: Presenters will review dementia staging, “traditional” oral options for Alzheimer’s disease treatment, new anti-amyloid monoclonal antibodies and their role, and options for treating agitation in Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
Concern to Clarity: Using Digital Tools & Blood Biomarkers to Transform Brain Health in Primary Care
- 9:40 AM – 9:55 AM
- Description: This session will explore how combining objective digital assessments with blood biomarkers can elevate cognitive care at the first point of contact. Attendees will learn how early identification enables proactive brain health strategies.
- 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM
- Description: Attendees will receive a concise understanding of the latest scientific developments, practical guidance, and key considerations regarding test access, patients communication, and care coordination.

- Description: Attendees will get a close look at the importance of early detection, explore tools for assessment, and learn about best practices for referral to enable accurate diagnosis and create a treatment option for early symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease.
