Symposium: Individualizing Breast Cancer Management
- Date: Thursday, Mar 27, 2025 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM EDT
- Location: Ballroom BC
- The field of cancer management is continuously evolving, with new advancements emerging regularly. In this session, the presenters will explore and discuss several recent breakthroughs in multidisciplinary cancer care. A central topic of focus will be the ongoing debate between conservation and mastectomy for cancer patients. They will explore how expanding conservation options are providing patients with greater flexibility in their treatment choices. Additionally, the presenters will examine the decision-making process involved in choosing between upfront surgery and neoadjuvant therapy. Moreover, they will engage in a comprehensive discussion about the de-escalation of surgery—both for the primary tumor and the axilla—and how radiation therapy is influenced by the tumor’s response to neoadjuvant treatment. This session aims to offer valuable insights and provoke thoughtful discussion on the latest advancements in cancer care.
CIA/YIA Research Presentations
- Date: Thursday, Mar 27, 2025 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM EDT
- Location: Room 122-123
- Join SSO as past award recipients present their research funded by the Clinical Investigator Awards ($50,000 per year for two years) and Young Investigator Awards ($25,000 for one year). Five presenters will share the findings from their award-winning research proposals.

- Location: Ballroom A
- The Great Debates showcase differing perspectives on the value of emerging technologies or treatment strategies compared to traditional practices. This year, the Great Debates in Breast Cancer will address two contentious issues. The first debate will center around the integration of the SOUND trial into clinical practice: should we forgo axillary surgery and instead rely on radiation, or should we opt for axillary surgery to avoid the need for radiation? The second discussion will explore the advancements in robotic surgery, comparing the benefits and drawbacks of robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy versus conventional nipple-sparing mastectomy.
Symposium: Safe Dissemination of New Technologies or Treatments in Practice
- Date: Saturday, Mar 29, 2025 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM EDT
- Location: Room 122-123
- This session will examine the safe integration of new technologies and treatments into clinical practice. It will explore three key perspectives, highlighting the balance and potential conflicts between the practicing surgeon and program/department leader, as well as the hospital and healthcare system’s viewpoint. Key topics will include the financial impact, maintaining quality, the process of safely learning and adopting new techniques, and evaluating patient outcomes.
