Description
Psoriasis (PsO) is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disease that affects 3% of US adults; it has been increasingly prevalent over the past years. The disorder is often characterized by chronicity, high grade of disability, and related comorbidities. Notably, biologic agents targeting the interleukin (IL)-23/IL-17 axis have demonstrated improved efficacy compared with conventional therapies and include several FDA-approved agents. This case-based continuing education program is intended to increase clinician knowledge of the key therapeutic targets within the IL-23/IL-17 pathway and the role of biologic agents directed against these key targets in managing PsO, including in difficult-to-treat areas. The mechanisms of action, efficacy, safety, and limitations of these agents are discussed, as well as methods to identify patients who would optimally benefit from these targeted biologic therapies.
Target Audience
This educational activity is directed toward dermatology nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other health care providers involved in managing PsO.
Learning Objectives
  • Apply recommended eligibility criteria to determine patients appropriate for anti–IL-17 and anti–IL-23 biologic therapies based on disease severity of PsO
  • Evaluate safety and efficacy data for approved anti–IL-17 and anti–IL-23 biologic agents directed against key treatment targets within the IL-23/IL-17 inflammatory pathway for managing PsO
  • Develop holistic, individualized management plans for patients with PsO that incorporate anti–IL-17 or anti–IL-23 biologic therapy based on patient-specific needs and shared goals of therapy
