Description
Although traditional surgical approaches for lung transplant including clamshell thoracotomy, median sternotomy, and thoracotomy are effective, these surgeries are invasive and associated with high postoperative morbidity. Robotic lung transplant offers advantages, including smaller incisions and less pain, and clinicians should be aware of this option for carefully selected patients. Furthermore, only approximately 25% of lungs that are offered to lung transplant centers are eventually transplanted. Ex vivo lung perfusion preserves lungs under physiologic conditions allowing time to evaluate lungs for transplant. Clinicians should be aware of ex vivo lung perfusion as a way to evaluate the lungs for transplant.
