Title
He’s Awake, but Not Himself: Treating the Hidden Symptoms of Narcolepsy
Link
Description
In narcolepsy, disrupted nighttime sleep and REM-intrusion phenomena contribute to daytime brain fog, poor concentration, and impaired work performance. In this 2nd episode of Talking Curbside in Narcolepsy, Drs Michael Thorpy and Phyllis Zee discuss how to manage the less overt symptoms of narcolepsy that, nevertheless, significantly undermine quality of life. By focusing on an adult with narcolepsy type 2, the faculty explore the clinical evidence for using oxybates to treat the full spectrum of the disorder—addressing both nocturnal sleep fragmentation and residual daytime deficits—while emphasizing patient-reported outcomes and holistic behavioral strategies to maximize function.
Target Audience
The activity is designed for US-based clinicians (eg, physicians, nurse practitioners [NPs], and physician associates [PAs]) who diagnose or treat central disorders of hypersomnolence (CDH), including clinicians who specialize in sleep medicine, neurology, psychiatry, or pulmonology.
Learning Objectives
  • Assess the full clinical spectrum of narcolepsy, including disrupted nighttime sleep (DNS) and hallucinations.
  • Describe the evidence base for the treatment of narcolepsy symptoms other than excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and cataplexy.
  • Integrate oxybate formulations with existing or emerging narcolepsy medications, while fostering patient-clinician communication and considering comorbidities.
