Title
Looking Beyond the Usual Suspects to Uncover NCFBE
Link
Description
People with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFBE)—a chronic respiratory condition characterized by airway inflammation, irreversible dilation of the bronchi, and recurrent infections—often present with respiratory comorbidities as well as gastrointestinal and psychological conditions that may increase risk of complications and adverse outcomes. Clinicians need to know how to recognize, diagnose, and manage NCFBE so that they can optimize treatment and improve patient outcomes. In this on-demand educational session, two expert pulmonologists will review cases that illustrate how to differentiate NCFBE from asthma and COPD and recognize factors and comorbidities that increase the risk for progression. Pre-recorded patient vignettes will foster mindfulness of patient perspectives and experiences with clinicians. By the end of this activity, clinicians will be prepared to confidently recognize NCFBE and distinguish it other common respiratory conditions, identify patient factors and comorbidities that can lead to NCFBE progression and worse prognosis, and explain the role of neutrophil serine proteases and neutrophilc inflammation in NCFBE pathophysiology.
Target Audience
The primary target audience for this activity are pulmonology and primary care clinicians.
Learning Objectives

  • Identify patient factors comorbidities that are associated with NCFBE progression and worse prognosis
  • Explain the role of neutrophilic inflammation and neutrophil serine proteases in the pathophysiology of NCFBE, along with the implications for therapeutic options
