Title
Cracking the Code to Encourage Earlier Diagnosis and Management of Obesity
Link
Description
Obesity is increasingly recognized as a chronic, progressive disease, yet many individuals remain undiagnosed or untreated. A variety of patient, clinician, and system-level barriers limit both the frequency and quality of obesity-related conversations in primary care, including evolving diagnostic paradigms, documentation gaps, and complexities in billing and coding for obesity care. These administrative challenges may discourage healthcare professionals from initiating weight-management discussions or fully utilizing available reimbursement pathways for obesity evaluation and follow-up services. This activity is designed for primary care professionals and provides an overview of contemporary recognition and evidence-based medical management of obesity, followed by practical guidance on coding optimization. Through realistic case-based examples, participants will learn how to apply accurate diagnostic and billing codes to facilitate appropriate reimbursement and enable improved guideline-concordant obesity care.
Target Audience
Primary care physicians, internists, PAs, and NPs
Learning Objectives
  • Initiate respectful, patient-centric conversations about the effects of excess weight and the impact that obesity can have on overall long-term health in an effort to intervene early and often.
  • Analyze the difference between preclinical and clinical obesity as well as the role of obesity management medications (OMMs) as an effective, evidence-based approach to reduce risk and treat obesity and its comorbidities.
  • Utilize obesity-specific billing codes to obtain appropriate reimbursement along the obesity care continuum, including for screening and counseling, intensive behavioral therapy, and gaining patient access to modern therapeutic approaches.
