Title
Emulating a Target Trial Using Observational Data
Link
Description
JAMA has recently revised its guidance on causal inference.1 Causal effect estimation is an unambiguous goal of a randomized trial, but it is also often a goal in many observational studies. JAMA’s revised guidance encourages investigators to be explicit about the causal questions posed, the approach taken, and the assumptions on which inferences rest; thus, some may embrace the target trial framework.1,2 That is, when analyzing observational data to estimate a causal effect, investigators can be explicit that they are trying to emulate a hypothetical randomized trial.
