Title
Beaded Bubbles in the Eye After Vitrectomy and Gas Fill
Link
Description
A patient in their late 30s with proliferative diabetic retinopathy underwent vitrectomy with intravitreal C3F8 gas fill in the left eye. Postoperatively, a distinct beaded-bubble appearance was observed (Figure). Usually, an individual large bubble appears after intravitreal gas injection to facilitate retinal reattachment. Instead, breakup of the larger C3F8 gas bubble into smaller bubbles, frequently termed fish eggs, occurred; the subsequent appearance of relatively large bubbles spread symmetrically across the entire interface seemed unusual. The occurrence of smaller bubbles usually is related to postoperative eye position and movement.1 These smaller bubbles can coalesce into a larger bubble over time if the patient avoids rapid head shaking or eye movement. Follow-up visits showed gradual absorption of the gas bubbles over several weeks, with no additional complications.
