Just published August 14th, 2025, The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s newest guideline on Assessment and Treatment of Adolescents and Young Adults With Substance Use Disorders and Problematic Substance Use (Excluding Tobacco).

The objective of this guideline is to enhance the quality of care and clinical outcomes for adolescents with Substance use disorder and problematic substance use. 

There are 4 treatment statements so let’s get started

  • The guideline suggests that brief motivational interviewing could be offered to adolescents and young adults with problematic alcohol use/alcohol use disorder. 
  • The guideline suggests that non-brief family therapy, motivational interviewing (MI), or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) could be offered to adolescents and young adults with problematic alcohol use/alcohol use disorder with or without other drug use, and CBT + non-brief MI could be offered to adolescents and young adults with illicit drug-related disorders. 
  • The guideline suggests that behavioral interventions that include Motivational Interviewing or Motivational Enhancement Therapy could be offered to college students with problematic alcohol use/alcohol use disorder. 
  • The guideline suggests that buprenorphine treatment could be offered to adolescents and young adults with opioid use disorder.
