A Novel Sex-Specific Association Between Insulin Resistance and Depressive Symptoms in Older Adults: The Potential Mediating Role of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor
- Journal of Affective Disorders, April 2025
- Description: Depression and insulin resistance are increasingly identified as interconnected aging conditions. Using the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index as a marker for insulin resistance, the study revealed that depressive symptoms were linked to higher levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and lower levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines. The TyG index showed notable connections to depressive symptoms and VEGF in women, highlighting a potential metabolic-inflammatory pathway specific to older women.
