The extra few minutes physicians spend enhancing their guideline awareness through online education can have a huge payoff for patients outcomes.
The STEEER-AF trial, sponsored by the European Society of Cardiology, revealed a major statistic: patients were more likely to receive improved care if their physicians participated in structured online education related to guideline adherence, compared with patients whose physicians did not.
Health professionals who partook in supplemental online guideline education benefited their patients directly. The study found that online education for health professionals increased patient adherence to guidelines by 51%.
While the study noted that stroke and blood clot prevention care was optimized, care for heart rhythm control was less sturdy. Only 1 in 5 patients had their heart rhythm care aligned with the ESC’s clinical practice guidelines. But those 20% of patients saw better outcomes, due to their physicians taking the time to brush up on the latest guidelines through online education.
