The American Urological Association (AUA) recently released a three-part update to its guideline, Management of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Attributed to Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. The 2026 benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) guideline is a major update that replaces the 2023 version and divides the guideline into three parts: Presentation and Evaluation, Medical Management, and Procedural/Surgical Management.

AUA BPH 2026 Guideline – Part 1: Presentation and Evaluation

Part 1 of the three-part 2026 AUA guideline update regarding the management of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) attributed to BPH features recommendations focusing on the presentation, evaluation, and management of men with BPH causing LUTS. Part 1 discusses patient history, physical examinations, tests, and patient counseling.

AUA BPH 2026 Guideline – Part 2: Medical Management

Part 2 of the three-part 2026 AUA guideline update regarding the management of LUTS attributed to BPH features recommendations focusing on medical management of men with BPH causing LUTS. Part 2 discusses non-procedural management, lifestyle and behavioral interventions, and specific risks for certain patient populations.

Part 3 of the three-part 2026 AUA guideline update regarding the management of LUTS attributed to BPH features recommendations focusing on procedural and surgical management of men with BPH causing LUTS. Part 3 discusses general procedural principles, interventions based on patient characteristics, sexual function, postoperative follow-up, and retreatment rates.
