The Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) held its annual conference in National Harbor, Maryland, from Wednesday, April 23, through Sunday, April 27. The conference was an exciting opportunity for networking and continuing education, and focused on topics surrounding obesity, ranging from nutrition to artificial intelligence.
Nutritionists, endocrinologists, physicians, and more all enjoyed the five-day conference while sharing their knowledge of the disease that the World Health Organization estimates affects 1 in 8 people globally. Here’s a look at some of the engaging topics presented at Obesity Medicine 2025.
Using Food as Medicine to Treat Disease
Description: The presentation reviewed the shift toward favoring food and supplements for preventing and treating diseases, and discussed evidence-based interventions including medically tailored meals, meal replacements, and produce prescriptions.
Objectives: Explained the benefits of gaining nutrients through food rather than supplements. Summarized the growing interest in using food and supplements to treat diseases. Discussed how some obesity treatments can cause nutrient deficiencies.
Hormones in Flux: Unlocking Metabolic Health Through the Menopause Transition and Beyond
Description: The session focused on how hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and lifestyle adjustment can aid healthy aging in women who are advancing through perimenopause and menopause when their body composition, metabolism, and weight are in flux.
Objectives: Featured evidence-based, weight-management lifestyle strategies for women experiencing perimenopausal and menopausal hormone shifts. Discussed the pros and cons of HRT for weight management related to the menopause transition. Outlined how the menopause transition affects women’s metabolism and weight.

Description: The session focused on the innovative drugs used to treat obesity and how they may one day be used alongside existing anti-obesity medications for better outcomes.
Objectives: Discussed the most recent clinical trial data collected from investigational anti-obesity medications, and how those medications may be used alongside existing medications.
Unmasking Lipedema in Obesity: Key Diagnostic Tips and Management Strategies
Description: For this session, the presenters overviewed lipedema and how it can be misdiagnosed as lymphedema or obesity. Discussed diagnostic protocols, treatment, and long-term care of lipedema.
Objectives: Differentiated lipedema from obesity and lymphedema through education of basic pathophysiology. Reviewed the surgical, conservative therapies, and medications that are used as treatment options. Provided clinicians with education for more accurate diagnosis.
Obesity Medicine and Artificial Intelligence: Now and What’s to Come
Description: The session discusses how clinical care teams can leverage the power of artificial intelligence to save time and resources during the treatment process of obesity. Practitioners gained insight into valuable AI tools they can integrate into their practice.
Objectives: Identified AI tools for clinical use in obesity treatment. Overviewed the pros and limits of those tools and how they can be used to personalize care.

Looking ahead, the 2026 conference is currently scheduled for April 8-12 in San Diego, California. Orlando, Florida is planned for 2027, with Dallas, Texas, and New Orleans, Louisiana, following in 2028 and 2029 respectively.
